Gyrocopters
What is a Gyrocopter?
A gyrocopter (also known as an autogyro or gyroplane) is a type of rotorcraft that uses an unpowered rotor in autorotation to develop lift. Unlike a helicopter, the rotor blades are not connected to the engine; instead, the engine powers a rear-mounted propeller that provides forward thrust.
As air passes through the rotor during forward flight, the rotor spins and generates lift. This unique design provides several advantages including simplified mechanics, stability in turbulent conditions, and the ability to fly safely at low speeds.
Gyrocopter Experience
Flying in a gyrocopter provides a thrilling open-air experience with excellent visibility, making it perfect for sightseeing and aerial photography. The open cockpit design on many models creates an exhilarating sensation of flight that larger aircraft simply cannot match.
- Typically seats 1-2 people
- Cruising speeds of 70-100 mph (110-160 km/h)
- Flight duration of 1-3 hours depending on the model
- Lower operating costs compared to helicopters
- Incredible maneuverability and stability in winds
Safety Features
Gyrocopters have an excellent safety record thanks to several key features:
Autorotation
Even if the engine fails, the rotor continues to spin in autorotation, allowing for a controlled descent.
Stability
The pendulum effect of the design makes gyrocopters inherently stable and resistant to stalling.
Short Take-off
Gyrocopters need minimal runway space for takeoff and landing, reducing associated risks.
