Insights

Originally founded by the Seleucid King Antiochus II in the 3rd century BCE, the city was named after his wife, Laodice. Its prime location along the Lycus River valley offered a natural conduit for both goods and ideas, making Laodicea an important cultural melting pot. Moreover, the city was part of the tri-city area, which also included Hierapolis and Colossae, each possessing its own unique resources and specialties. The remnants of Laodicea, including a well-preserved theater, a large stadium, and intricate aqueduct systems, serve as a testimony to its once-great status.

In religious history, Laodicea holds special significance as one of the Seven Churches of Revelation mentioned in the Christian Bible. The Book of Revelation contains a message directed at the church in Laodicea, offering both critique and guidance.

Beyond its biblical connections, Laodicea was renowned for its medical school and a special eye salve, produced from a local Phrygian stone called 'Phrygian powder'. The city was also famous for its black wool, a lucrative textile product that contributed to its economic affluence.
